A question I get asked all the time is: "What kind of marketing should I be doing?" As a small business owner you know that marketing is important, and you know you ought to be doing something. But what kind of marketing should you be doing?
What you don't want is to be guilty of shiny object syndrome. This is when you just do whatever hot new thing comes along. So someone says, "Hey Tik Tok's really hot right now", or "Hey did you know print back in style", or "What do you mean you're not doing video!"
I'm not saying that new things are bad, but first you need a solid baseline of tried and true marketing tactics that reliably get you customers that make you money. If you want to know my four absolute must do marketing tactics for any business keep watching.
Hi I'm Tom Malesic founder and President of EZMarketing and you're watching Ask EZ. This is where small business owners go to get real answers to their marketing questions.
#1 Your Website
If you need to pick one tactic to get started with, start with your website design. It's absolutely the most important thing you're going to do.
Look, if you don't have a website you don't exist. A website's going to validate your business and it's often people's first impression.
Your website's the center of all your marketing. All other marketing tactics, whether it's ads, emails, social media, they tend to direct people back to your website. If you've got a terrible website people are going to be disappointed when they get there, meaning all the money that you dumped into those other marketing tactics is wasted.
I can't overstate how IMPORTANT your website is. START with your website and build the rest of your marketing from there.
#2: Search Engine Optimization
Second, I want you to do search engine optimization. After you have a great website, if no one sees it, you've wasted your money.
Your website isn't like Kevin Costner's "Field of Dreams". If you build it, it doesn't necessarily mean that they will come. You need to make sure people can find it which is where search engine optimization comes in.
We all know that right now someone's doing a search on google looking for a business like yours to help them. They want to hand money over to you. If your website isn't showing up when they do a search, you're missing out. You need to invest in SEO to make sure customers find you when they're doing a search, instead of your competitors.
#3: Email Marketing
My third tip is email marketing. Look, you may love it, you may hate it, but the fact still remains that people do business after getting emails. Studies have shown time and time again that it's the most cost effective way to reach existing customers and prospects.
Unlike other types of marketing where you often are trying to attract new customers, email marketing really shines with building relationships with existing customers. We all know that the easiest customer to sell is the one that you already have and emails are great at promoting products and services and special offers to existing customers.
If you're not using email marketing you're leaving money on the table.
#4: Social Media
And finally you should look at social media. You don't need to do every platform or post every day, but every business should have a presence on social media. It's a no-brainer!
Literally billions of people are using it, and they spend a lot of time there. It's different from other marketing tactics, because you can engage with your audience and have two-way conversations. Getting started and setting up a business page is free. When you do pay, Facebook is arguably the most detailed ad targeting platform in the world.
Bottom line: social media is a unique addition to your marketing mix and is a no-brainer for your business.
All right here's your homework: if you're not already doing these four marketing tactics, it's time to start.
That doesn't mean that you need to spend tons of money overnight to send thousands of emails or try to rank #1 on Google for your keywords. There are easy ways that you can get started with each of these tactics that won't break the bank.
