Is email marketing spam?

Many small business owners are reluctant to do email marketing because, well you're afraid of spamming people. You get hundreds of annoying junk emails in your inbox and you don't want to do the same thing. You probably feel like email marketing is just bothering your customers.

But the truth is email marketing can be incredibly valuable to your customers. To find out how to do email marketing without spamming people keep watching.

Hi, I'm Tom Malesic, founder and President of EZMarketing and you're watching AskEZ. This is where small business owners go to get real answers to their marketing questions.

What's the difference between Spam and Email Marketing?

Well spam is unsolicited bulk email, right? There are two parts of that: unsolicited and bulk.  Which means:

  1. Unsolicited: no one asked for it
  2. Bulk: you just sent it out in mass quantities.

It's indiscriminate in nature. It's sending the same message to everyone on whatever list you have regardless of the context or who they are.

Now email marketing is using email to promote your products and services and develop a relationship. While it might be sent in bulk, it should never be sent unsolicited and shouldn't be sent to anyone in the world who you just happen to have an email address for.

How to Do Email Marketing Without Spamming

So how do you do email marketing without spamming people?

The answer is really simple: send emails that people want

People hate spam because it's junk mail that they don't want. So if you don't want to bother people send them something that they actually want.

I have three tips on how to avoid being a spammer.

Tip #1: Get Permission

Be sure that people want to hear from you in the first place.

Now there are lots of ways that you can get permission. They could download something off your website. Maybe they signed up for a newsletter, they could have attended an event or they're already a customer and doing business with you.

Tip #2: Be Relevant

You need to give people a reason to open your emails. You can offer them something of value, maybe you entertain them, or you just tell them something that's really interesting.

There are some emails that I get that I really look forward to getting in my inbox because I know that they're going to provide value to me.

You can also be more relevant by personalizing your emails and segmenting your list so that you're sending a more targeted message that the recipient is more likely to find useful.

Tip #3: Make it Easy to Unsubscribe

To comply with email laws you have to have an unsubscribe link. And if people no longer want to hear from you, you should give them an easy way out. You might be thinking yeah but I don't want to lose these people on my email list. But why do you want to market to someone who's totally not interested or worse angry and frustrated on your list? They're not going to become customers anyway.

So remember responsible email marketing is NOT spam. It's sending valuable information to people who you know and they want to hear from you. If you focus on sending valuable emails that your customers actually want you'll discover that it's a great way to build relationships and one of the most cost-effective methods to promote your products and your services.
